IronMāori 2026: taking on the challenge together
Published: October 8, 2026
IronMāori is back for 2026, and this year tāngata whai ora and kaimahi from across the Wise Group whānau are taking on the challenge together. For the first time, we also have taiohi observing the tamariki and rangatahi event. We know physical and mental health are deeply connected, so we’re dedicated to helping tāngata whai ora and taiohi have the best physical health possible.
Held in Ahuriri, Napier, on Saturday 7 November, IronMāori is an annual kaupapa Māori triathlon grounded in hauora, connection and longevity. Designed to be grassroots and inclusive, the kaupapa is about supporting people to challenge themselves and take practical steps towards better hauora.
Supporting Māori hauora
Māori experience significant inequities in health and life expectancy. Life expectancy is around 7.6 years shorter for Māori men and 6.4 years shorter for Māori women compared with European/Other New Zealanders. Furthermore, around 60% of the Māori life expectancy gap has been attributed to preventable causes.
These inequities are one of the reasons why IronMāori matters. The kaupapa creates space for kōrero about hauora and physical wellbeing, challenges whakamā around health, and celebrates people taking steps towards better health and wellbeing in a supportive environment.
Taking on the challenge together
Across Pathways and Real, tāngata whai ora are preparing to take part alongside kaimahi who are supporting them through the challenge. Workwise will also be represented, with a kaimahi team taking part together.
For the participants, taking on IronMāori can mean different things. For some, it’s about setting a personal goal and pushing themselves. For others, it’s about trying something new, building confidence or simply having fun and connecting with people.
For the Wise Group, IronMāori is an opportunity to celebrate the strength and determination of our tāngata whai ora and kaimahi, while creating more opportunities to talk openly about wellbeing.
We’ll be cheering our teams on every step of the way.
Karawhiua! Go for it!
