In Auckland, Pathways operates Hamlin Road Farm, a certified organic farm that provides unique transitional employment and education opportunities.
Established by Pathways in 2002, the farm grows certified organic produce. It offers people the chance to work as a trainee farmhand for up to six months while they are supported in their wellness. Trainees gain valuable paid work experience, learn skills and build confidence while they prepare for permanent employment elsewhere.
People working at Hamlin Road Farm can also choose to study towards NZQA horticulture standards through Manukau Institute of Technology.
With a strong focus on sustainability, Hamlin Road Farm grows an array of organic produce and seedlings in its nine large outside garden beds, six shade houses and its citrus orchard and propagation house. Some of the organic produce grown includes coriander, spinach, lettuce, kale, garlic, pak choi, beans, beetroot, fennel and more.
The farm also runs a small sheep operation and a lawn mowing service.
When Pathways acquired the 10 acres of land and the funding to start Hamlin Road Farm, we approached the community for their involvement in shaping the farm’s direction. Staff and people who use Pathways’ services, as well as a real mix of families, business people and community members attended a public meeting in Papakura to talk about their ideas.
We asked people how they wanted the land to be used and their ideas shaped our decision making. It’s the same approach we use in our everyday work at Pathways – it’s about asking people what they want, what their hopes and aspirations are.
