About Keys

Often if you’ve experienced mental illness you may have lived in, or received support from, clinical or community-based mental health services, like those offered by Pathways. Keys Living Choices is a housing service operating independently under Pathways. The service grew out of the Supported Landlord Bureau that was piloted in Hamilton in 2001.

Keys provides both a step from residential-based support into affordable, quality and independent living and practical support around managing a tenancy.

Essentially there are three aspects to Keys:

  • As a landlord - managing houses and tenancies on behalf of Housing New Zealand (HNZ).
  • As a housing facilitator - helping people who have a diagnosed mental illness to find and keep a home of their choosing.
  • Providing practical support – such as accessing entitlements, getting the house set up and budgeting.

“Having a place to live that is affordable and meets our needs is important to us all”

National Housing Co-ordinator Annette McCosh explains Keys Living Choices’ services are a significant step towards achieving the vision outlined in “Our Lives 2014’ where people want equitable access to affordable, sustainable, independent housing.

Keys Living Choices currently operates in Wellington, Wanganui, New Plymouth, Hamilton and Auckland. Everyday staff at Keys hear inspirational stories about people who have found a home and kept it, people who have met the challenge of change and unlocked their future.
