Hui Journeys

Every two years the karanga goes out, calling all Pathways people to come together for a three-day hui to relax, celebrate and focus on shaping the future direction of Pathways.

When everyone, including tangata whaiora, whanau, Pathways employees, managers and trustees, come together in the supportive marae setting, they are able to step outside their usual roles to share their ideas, views and aspirations either through formal oratory on the paepae and informal korero over kai.

Most recently about 160 people converged on Tapu Te Ranga Marae in Wellington for the Pathways Hui in March 2007. One of the strongest messages to come out of the hui was that people want their stories to be heard, to know that we’re listening to what they have to say. At the heart of this is respecting the individual and their hopes and dreams.

Dynamic

As a staff member and former service user myself, I found it a deep and moving experience to have so many people in the same place at the same time.

Support

I was supported by Whitiora staff, Simon and Shane, my neighbour Mavis to Pathways’ hui at Island Bay’s Tapu Te Ranga Marae.

Well Worth Attending

When I was asked if I could write a summary about the Pathways National Hui I thought to myself, that’s easy, I could sum that up in three words “well worth attending”. Then I thought to myself, this isn’t an adequate summary, as people would as why was it well worth attending? So this got me thinking...
